REMAKING
FAMILY GOLD

✤

Old Gold, Carried Forward

Inherited rings, old wedding bands and jewellery that is no longer worn can sometimes become the starting point for something new.

From our Adelaide workshop, suitable gold can be assessed, melted and remade into a new piece by an experienced jeweller, before being finished with hand engraving or a personal inscription by EMT.

The result is more than a new piece made from old gold.

The material carries its own history forward, while the engraving can add something particular to you — a pattern, words, dates, symbols or details intended to remain with the piece for the next part of its life.

Adelaide and interstate commissions are welcome.

Keeping What Matters

The piece may change. The material doesn't have to.

Jewellery often becomes unworn long before it loses its importance.

A wedding ring may no longer fit. An inherited piece may not suit the person who now owns it. Several small pieces may have been passed down through a family but spend their lives tucked safely away.

Where the gold is suitable for remaking, it can instead become material for a piece that belongs to the present while retaining a tangible connection to where it came from.

Old wedding bands, inherited gold and other sentimental jewellery can all be considered.

Every piece is assessed individually before we recommend what is possible.

✥

From Family Gold to a New Heirloom

Made and engraved within one Adelaide workshop.

EMT works alongside experienced jewellers within our Adelaide workshop, allowing the making and hand engraving of a piece to be considered together from the beginning.

Depending on the project, your existing gold may be melted and remade into a new ring or other piece, with stones potentially retained or incorporated where suitable.

—❦—

Once made, I can add the final layer through hand engraving — from a quiet inscription known only to the wearer to pattern, ornament or imagery developed specifically for the piece.

For sentimental jewellery, this offers something particularly special: the history isn't carried only by the gold. It can be deliberately recorded in the finished piece.

A name. A place. A date. Words once spoken. A family motif. A pattern chosen for what it represents.

The new piece can become an heirloom in its own right.

Wedding Bands from Family Gold

—❦—

Something old can become the beginning of something new.

If you have inherited wedding rings or family gold, it may be possible to use that material to create your own wedding band.

There is something particularly fitting about carrying family gold into a marriage: the original jewellery does not need to remain unchanged for its history to remain present.

Your new band can then be hand engraved with one of EMT's existing patterns, personalised with an inscription, or developed as an individual design.

For couples who have gold from both families, we can also discuss what may be possible and appropriate with the material you have.

What Can I Bring?

Start with what you have.

You don't need to know whether your jewellery is suitable before getting in touch.

You might have:

  • inherited or family gold

  • old wedding bands

  • broken or damaged gold jewellery

  • rings that are no longer worn

  • several small pieces you would like considered together

  • jewellery containing stones you hope to retain

  • an existing piece you would like transformed rather than simply repaired.

Send photographs and whatever you know about the pieces. We can then advise on the best next step.

How The Process Works

01

Tell us what you have

Begin with the enquiry form below. Include photographs of your jewellery and tell us anything you know about its history, metal, stones and what you would like the finished piece to become.

You don't need to arrive with a finished design.

Initial consultation

02

I'll review your enquiry from both an engraving and design perspective. Where remaking or specialist jewellery work is involved, your project will also be discussed with the jewellers working alongside me in our Adelaide workshop.

This allows us to consider the making and engraving together before recommending a direction.

Assessment

03

Sentimental jewellery needs to be assessed before we can confirm how it should be used.

Metal composition, condition, quantity, existing solder, stones and the requirements of the new design can all affect what is possible. Additional metal may sometimes be required.

We'll explain our recommendations before you commit to proceeding.

Tell us what you have

04

Once we've established what can be made from your jewellery, we'll develop the new piece and its engraving together.

You'll receive a clear proposal and quotation before work begins.

Remaking

05

Your jewellery is carefully documented and entrusted to the jeweller undertaking your project. Suitable gold is prepared and remade according to the agreed design, with stones retained or reset where the project allows.

Hand Engraving

06

The finished piece then comes to my bench for its engraving.

This might be an inscription, traditional ornament, one of my existing patterns or something developed specifically around the history and meaning of your piece.

Once completed, your new piece is photographed and prepared for collection or secure return delivery.

What began as jewellery you could no longer wear returns in a form intended to become part of your life again.

Interstate Commissions

You don't need to be in Adelaide.

Remaking sentimental jewellery requires trust, and we understand that sending irreplaceable pieces away can feel very different from placing an ordinary online order.

Interstate projects therefore begin with photographs and a consultation before anything is sent to us. We'll establish whether your project is likely to be suitable, discuss the proposed direction and explain the next steps first.

If your jewellery needs to come to Adelaide for physical assessment, we'll provide instructions for sending it securely.

Once it arrives, its condition and contents are documented before work proceeds.

Consultations throughout the project can be handled remotely, and your completed piece can be securely returned to you.

Interstate enquiries are very welcome.

Shipping & Insurance

Please do not send jewellery to the workshop before contacting us.

For interstate commissions, we'll provide sending instructions once we've reviewed your enquiry.

Appropriate shipping and insurance arrangements will depend on the nature and value of the pieces being sent and will be discussed with you beforehand.

We will also explain the arrangements for secure return delivery of your finished piece as part of your quotation.

Why Hand Engraving?

A further layer of history.

—❦—

Using family gold preserves something physical.

Engraving gives us the opportunity to preserve something less tangible.

Words, initials, dates, places, symbols and patterns can record something of the people or story behind the original jewellery — or mark the beginning of the life the new piece is being made for.

Sometimes that meaning is visible. Sometimes it belongs on the inside of a ring, known only to its wearer.

Either way, it is cut by hand into the piece and becomes part of what is passed forward with it.
